THE MEANING OF PSYCHOTHERAPY / COUNSELLING

In an environment of trust and confidence we aimto accept and understand the client’s thoughts and feelings. Each individual is given the chance:

• to reflect on his or her current circumstances
• to re-examine already tried solutions
• to change perspective
• to explore alternative options
• to discover new patterns for his or her relationships.

In order to achieve these things, one does not need to analyse his whole past and present life. We intend to attain the most optimal outcome with the least possible number of sessions. The systemic therapist orients himself or herself towards utilizing a person’s innate resources, focuses on solutions and offers emotional support. Within a few sessions a safe context is created that encourages personal development.

Sessions last from 60 to 90 minutes. The interval between sessions ranges from one to several weeks, depending on the client’ s needs.

If the original client provides consent, sessions might be attended by anyone who is willing to contribute to the solution of the problem (such as a family member, friend etc.). For instance, if a mother comes for the first session, the rest of her family might join in for subsequent sessions. Likewise, it may be that a husband comes to the initial session and that later on his wife joins in and participates in the counselling process. It may also be that a whole family starts attending sessions together, yet later the parents continue the counselling alone. The structure of every session is agreed upon jointly by the clients and the therapist depending on what is considered to be most useful given the clients’ current circumstances.

In special cases it is possible to have sessions on the phone or Skype.
